Pink Floyd released the Syd Barret inspired, “Wish You Were Here” in 1975. In 2011 producer and engineer James Guthrie, from the original master tapes, has created a Floydian experience unlike anything I have yet to hear from their catalogue, this includes the “Dark Side of the Moon” 5.1 release. It is as if the band knew in 1975 5.1 on the horizon. It has been said that WYWH was originally a quad mix. Was the Wizard of OZ DSOTM coincidence? The depth and the clarity of WYWH starts with David Gilmour in 2-channel, then includes Rodger Water’s bass in the center and Richard Wright in the rears. Once it eases into “Welcome to the Machine”, James Guthrie is in full surround band mode.

WYWH 5.1 is a must for all Floyd Fans.

Van Halen opened their forty year reunion tour at the KFC Yum Center, in Louisville, KY to support their first album with David Lee Roth in twenty eight years, ” A Different Kind of Truth”. Kool and The Gang warmed the packed venue playing an entertaining set from their catalogue of disco mega hits from the eighties. But this night was not about disc, fans dressed in memorabilia from the bands past tours were the to witness the rock legends return to the stage. As the lights went on with heavy opening chords of “You Really Got Me” and from the start it was loud and clear, Van Halen was back with all the power of the past. “Running With The Devil”, followed and erased any doubt that Eddie Van Halen is still one of rock’s greatest guitarist. His powerful sound was filled lighting fast notes and heavy chords played flawlessly. It is clear to see why he was voted eighth in Rolling Stone Magazine’s top 100 all time guitarist. Brother and a founding member Alex Van Halen is an outstanding drummer. The bass is now handled by Eddie’s son, Wolfgang, who replaced original bassist , Michael Anthony. It was clear that father and son enjoy performing together. One question I do have, Where the keyboards came from on jump? I didn’t see the instrument on stage, if it was a recording the synch was done perfectly. David Lee Roth can still entertain. His vocals were strong although he stayed away from his memorable screams of the past. His leg kicks are few and far between but his dancing and showmanship doesn’t miss a beat. He covers the massive stage, including runway and several risers throughout the show. He even glossed over forgetting the words to the last chorus of a song singing, “ I forgot the words bring on the chorus” It is no secret that the Van Halen’s and Roth have had their issues through the years, it didn’t show on this night. The band seemed to be having fun and interactions between Roth,Wolfgang and Eddie Van ended in smiles and laughter. The band covered the majority of their biggest hits, sprinkled in a few early songs along with four songs from the new album. Even with “The Cradle Will Rock” and songs from the Sammy Hagar era left out. This show was a classic! Although this was their opening performance, it’s hard to imagine the band getting any tighter! They played and sang every note to perfection. If these guys can hold on to the the energy and their health as the tour progresses it’s one show you don’t want to miss! The Opeth website states,” Opeth has spent over two decades steadily amassing a body of work that is at once possessed of a fervent and unrelenting devotion to aesthetic progression (and perfection) while simultaneously scaling the summits of power, mysticism and might aspired to by the group’s hard rock forefathers in Sabbath, Purple and Zeppelin.”

Clocking in at around 50 minutes, Workingman’s Bread could be considered a jam oriented recording. WMB includes no covers, unless you consider their nod to Iron Butterfly’s ”In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” and Hendrix’s “Third Stone From The Sun” in “Will Hear.” Each song is well crafted lyrically and include a healthy dose of instrumental interactions, thus the Psychedelia categorization. Upon my initial listen I was drawn to “Brian Jones”, as it opens with a Bevis Frond-like feel. After listening further the comparison is right on, Nick Saloman would be proud of the recording.

On “Forever Away” WMB features Pete Nice on pedal steel. Pete is the nephew of the late, great Kurt Vonnegut (and he is referenced early in Vonnegut’s book, “Slapstick”). Also of notoriety is Kenneth (K.d.) Robinson, vocals, who has recorded and worked with people like George Clinton and Smokey Robinson and Alamantra drummer, Brandon Allison, is the grandson of NASCAR hall of famer, Bobby Allison.

The War On Drugs are excited to share the brand new video for “Brothers,” one of the many highlights off their stellar Slave Ambient. Following the more kaleidoscopic videos for “Baby Missiles” and “Come to the City,” the “Brothers” video, which premiered this morning via New York Magazine’s Vulture, definitely takes a different approach with its bleak western narrative. More on the “Brothers” video from the director team of Brewer, a pair of brothers (Ben and Alex), actually, is below.
The band is mainly made up of members from Copenhagen, Denmark and the Malmö, Sweden area. This is the last of the material from the October 2008 studio session that gave us the Dead Man in Space and Slip into the Vortex releases. The music on this CD is one long 56min space rock jam! We split it into three parts for ease of play. It starts very slow heavy and spacey with a massive sound, before the track heads into a new directions with some beautiful guitar. A uptempo section develops after 15 or so minutes and features some intense guitar and synthesizer interaction. Due to an out of tune synthesizer, a new synthesizer section was overdubbed by Mogens. Magnus also replaced one of his guitar sections but other than these two small sections it is a completely improvised piece of music. Enjoy.. A heavy and emotional piece of music. IT was recorded and mixed at the Black Tornado studio in Copenhagen. Mastered in Göteborg by Henrik Udd.

Graveyard – Hisingen Blues. It seems that some newer bands with an older sound are trying to keep things simple with their names. Two that come to mind are Ghost and The Sword. They both have a very throwback sound to them, almost giving them a 70′s hard rock sound. Graveyard falls in to the same spectrum but not to be compared to those two very different bands. While The Sword has a somewhat psychedelic/muddy sound to them and Ghost sounds like a cross between Blue Oyster Cult and Mercyful Fate, Graveyard has more of a blues/rock sound to them that just seems to come off so much more natural.

If you’re not familiar with the band, let me give you a very brief history. Formed in Sweden in 2006, Graveyard was birthed by the separation of a the band Norrsken. They released a self titled album in 2007 and will soon release Hisingen Blues through Nuclear Blast.

If you are anything like myself, you kind of grew up on a lot of classic rock before discovery the sheer ferocity of heavy metal. My parents listened to music that while very pleasant in nature, um, kind of sucked. My brother introduced me to a few bands in the early 80′s but I really don’t think I could credit him for my love of metal today. Somewhere along the line I got a copy of Aerosmith’s Greatest Hits. Soon after I heard AC/DC’s Back in Black Album and found that I really loved Led Zeppelin after listening to Physical Graffiti. From there it just snow-balled. And this is probably why I’m absolutely loving this album.

Graveyard has this commanding presence and energy that just draws you in. The hard rocking blues sound they have is very reminiscent of Led Zeppelin with some Sabbath love, a tinge of Deep Purple and the soul of The Jimmy Hendrix Experience. I might even go so far as say they have a pinch of Steppenwolf and Grateful Dead in their influential bag of tricks.

Another thing that is really great about this album is that it all sounds so organic and that’s probably because, if I’m not mistaken, they recorded in analog. I tend to use the word ‘Organic’ with recordings like this a little too much, but I would like to say that this album sounds just so much more honest instead. The production, regardless, is perfect. Let’s check out just a few tracks.

“Ain’t Fit To Live Here” gets the album off to a fast start with killer, classic sounding riffs and this is where you get the first taste of singer Joakim Nillson’s vocal chops that will have you trying to sing along in your car and make a complete ass of yourself, trying to hit the range that he does. I would suggest only trying to sing along while you’re alone.

“No Good, Mr. Holden” slows things down in to a more bluesy sound. You might want to turn the lights down, fire up (if that’s what you do) and kick back with a cold one. The solos in this one are melodic, free flowing and very Hendrix or SRV’ish.

“Hisingen Blues”, the title track shoves things back in to a faster tempo and this is where you first here the name of Lucifer, how he’s standing right beside him and they are holding hands. Isn’t that sweet? All joking aside, it’s a cool track.

I’m not going to go on and on about how awesome this album is…but it is. If you’re into classic rock and actually want something new to listen to because the radio stations play the same tired songs they have been playing for the last 40 years, then check out graveyard and indulge in the goodness of Hisingen Blues.
