Jeff Beck 4-17-11 The State Theatre Minneapolis
“…The two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is admired for his virtuosity and his versatility. What other guitarist would go from “Over the Rainbow” to Jimi Hendrix, from Sly and the Family Stone to “Nessun Dorma,” as Beck and his band did Sunday night at the sold-out State Theatre in Minneapolis?
For 95 minutes, the 66-year-old British veteran treated the faithful to eloquent melodies, startling speed and articulate expressions. But, frankly, the concert was more virtuosic than vital. Too often, it felt as if Beck was performing, not playing the music. At times, this felt more like a recital than a rock concert.
Beck and his three accompanists seldom got cooking. Almost all the selections were limited to five or six minutes, with little opportunity for the musicians to jam or solo. This program was mostly about Beck and his expressive guitar.” More by Star Tribune JON BREAM
